MODELS, BEAUTY queens, stewardesses, and actresses. Freechal, the now bankrupt Internet portal site, set off outrage when it chose to list these occupations as examples of the types of applicants they wanted. By requiring experience from these jobs for a job opening at strategic planning and foreign affairs, the company was accused of “lookism,” or discrimination based on physical appearance. Freechal responded to this allegation by stating that applicants in the occupations they had listed had invested great money and time. Thus, they argued, these people would be exceptional at jobs that required meeting a lot of people. Whether the public bought this or not is unknown, but it seems to be the growing opinion that looks matter a lot more than just in terms of beauty. How we look seems to be affecting our lives in ever-broader ways, permeating into not just our private lives regarding love and marriage, but also into our career prospects and social life. In order to examine the effects that looks are having on society, *The Yonsei Annals* surveyed 1,000 Yonseians on this issue.
