In retrospect, the year 2009 was truly eventful. Due to the global financial/real crisis of 2008, most countries have been suffering from economic stagnation and unemployment. In the political and military realms, due to tension in the territories of Iran, North Korea, and Afghanistan, it seems as if we are walking through a mine field. At the same time, starvation, disease, crime, and the environment destruction seem to be increasing around the globe.

HUMAN SOCIETY has evolved around an axis of continuous "change in value systems." When geocentric theory was considered a universal and undoubted "truth" in the 16th century, Copernicus boldly claimed a heliocentric theory based on his research for numerous years. Although he could not openly claim this fact due to the blind atmosphere of the Catholic Church intimating the lives of those opposing its principle, his notion turned out to be right. Moreover, most exceptional geniuses in diverse fields, and their works, have not been appreciated but were rather condemned in the eras they lived; their gifted talents became highly valued by posterity, as the paradigm changed.

[Special Report] As each state endeavors to realize its values, conflicts inevitably surface in the absence of empathy. The repercussion of such calamitous failure to sympathize with others epitomizes the case of "sexual slavery," a peculiar institution Japan systemized during World War II and has denied since. Japan defends its acts of aggression and the collateral damage in the Pacific areas at the time, referring to its domestic laws and treaties signed with other concerned parties in the regions. However, the governing laws that bind the international community and its constituents precede such legal measures as symbolically recognized in the infamous Nuremberg trial. Hence, Japan may never mount an unconditional immunity from the very legalities for the "crimes against humanity." Meanwhile, Korea must crystallize the delicate line between compassion and consideration to deliver an effective response to the Japan's unrelenting disavowal.

When we were children, we could see cartoons in our everyday life. However, as we got older, it just shaded away. This Photo Essay shows us the way to go back to the childhood in which we had real passion and dream. As college students, we only read texts that are related to our major, classes, exams, quizzes and reports. By looking at the cartoon's production process, we can realize how difficult and effort-taking it is to make cartoons. Some people in college still release their passion through cartoons. Wanting to write and draw comes out of the deprivation. But still, we eventually have to ask what would happen to the actual life. Cartoons are not for just enjoyment anymore. Cartooning for us is an act of defiance born of the need to pursue the truth and liberty. Cartoonist listened and heard about a world that exists in reality as well as in the imagination, too, in the hearts and minds of real people.

STANDING WATER that does not flow meets the fate of stagnating, eventually. Streams and rivers can maintain fresh water because they are not stuck in one place. Imagine a sea without the movement of waves and ocean currents, blocked from other sources of water. An apparent example of such a sea is the Dead Sea, which is unable to support any living organism. This principle of nature is applicable to the human civilization and culture on the whole. Development of today's world is the fruit of innumerable interactions among diverse civilizations and cultures. We are living in an era of globalization, where the exchange of ideas, goods, and people is inevitable. The actors of such interchange between countries, societies, and organizations, have been none other than "people."At this point, let us take a look at the tendency of many prestigious universities in Korea regarding employment of new professors. Although no university would acknowledge the criticism that, when hiring new faculty, they consider if one is a graduate of the same school rather than academic achievement, results indicate otherwise. Such "faculty inbreeding" may well be one of the stumbling blocks obstructing Korean universities from becoming renowned in the world.

Last winter I went skiing with my family including my son who was in middle school. I took my son to the skiing school because of his interest in the trendy snow-boarding; thus, my intention was to have my son learn snow-boarding in the skiing school. However, after taking a look at the fee of the course he stepped back and told me he would try to learn it by himself. The fee seemed too expensive to him. I insisted that he take the course and he finally accepted my suggestion with much thanks. He learned snow-boarding all day from morning until the afternoon. Next day I was surprised to see that he was boarding smoothly like someone who had already a few years of experience. Although he took the lesson for a day only, he was even better than his elder sister. My daughter has been practicing snow-boarding by herself with her friends all winter long, without taking a skiing school course. Knowing that my daughter was also good at sports, I was shocked by the effect of learning with a good teacher. From this event I was enlightened, although it was hardly new, by the fact that having a good teacher is the most important thing in our life.

EVERYONE HAS an unforgettable memory of his or her own, whether it be good or bad. For the Korean victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese soldiers during the Japanese colonial period, such a memory is engraved in their hearts as han, or grudge. These so-called comfort women have now become grandmothers, but the scar becoming more vivid day by day still remains in their hearts, for they have not yet even received an official apology from Japan. Thus, these old ladies have gathered in front of Japanese embassy every Wednesday since 1992 to hold demonstrations to demand an apology from the Japanese government, whether there is sunshine, rain, or snow.

Nowadays, there are many people who are sensitive about their weight around me. They are also usually concerned about their weight at meals. We can easily find these cases. The Yonsei Annals warned many readers of dangerous diet and the society's misconception of beauty in the June issue of the magazine by criticizing such cases. Indeed, many people are currently suffering from such side effects of dangerous diets. Is there no way to stop suffering? I think that this article of the Annals could help many Younseians to realize that the wrong kind of diet can make a person ill. I hope that the Annals will criticize a serious social problem straightforwardly.

Korea has a unique history in the terms of ODA(Official Development Assistance). As we know, Korea was a recipient country of ODA in the 1960s and 70s when it endeavored to transform itself from one of the poorest countries in the world into a middle-income country. A few decades later, Korea has become the world's 13th largest economy and has been actively engaged in the international community as an emerging donor.

ALTHOUGH IT may seem like 2009 has barely started, two-thirds of it has already passed, and the second semester has come to the Yonsei campus. Indeed, a new semester means a new start for the students, and it also provides students many chances to mature through learning in new courses, participating in dongahree activities, and so on. Yet, if spent in an effective and efficient way, the vacation is a time that can be more rewarding to students in that they can enrich personal experiences in various dimensions by focusing on a few certain things and fully devoting to them.

DID YOU know that your brain contains about 100 billion neurons, which is about 16 times the total number of people on Earth? Moreover, though the brain weighs only about 2% of overall body weight, it uses up to 20% of the body’s energy, while controlling the entire body. If the concept of “well-being” has prevailed until now, *well-thinking* recently has risen to the surface. These days, people are not satisfied only with getting and staying in shape, as well as eating healthily; their area of interest has extended to the brain. Well-thinking is not yet commonly known among people, but interest in numerous products like games and food beneficial to the brain have signaled the growth of this trend. The era of well-thinking has emerged.

BEEP, BEEP! Beep, beep! To the sound of the abrupt early morning alarm, most people wake up still deeply immersed in sleep, with neither makeup nor neat hair. However, such a scene had been an exception to some: stars on TV. Stars were always portrayed with makeup, tidy hair, and dressy clothes even when they were pictured as having just gotten out of bed. Nonetheless, along with the popularity of reality programs, celebrities have started to show a diversity of natural everyday images, unlike the past when they only tried to maintain pretty or handsome images. They have not only conveyed the message that stars are also human beings just like the general public but also shattered the prevailing illusions regarding stars. Star personas evolved as society changed.

HAVE YOU ever seen foreigners wearing t-shirts with large, plain Korean letters on them, often provoking bemusement? The picture of Britney Spears wearing a worldwide brand Dolce & Gabbana dress with strange Korean alphabet on is an example. The *hangeul* products made in the past were often cheaply printed with no artistic design put into them. In contrast, the *hangeul* items made recently have taken design into consideration. Now, *hangeul* design is used not only in fashion, but also in art works, public design, etc. The paradigm concerning *hangeul* has started to shift from a mere language to a field of design.

“DEAR STATUE of the Eagle, even though my love for you is unreturned and one-sided now, I will make Yonsei remember me in the future,” thought a young Paik Ji-yeon (’83, Dept. of Psych.) as she stood gazing at the statue, the symbol of Yonsei Univ. A few years later, this ambitious girl became an exemplary female announcer and a role model of many women.
