Not Just Any SpringThe enchanting spring of April April, the beginning of spring, is enchanting. The once merely frigid air now carries the sweet scent of spring, with an ambiguous temperature that encompasses both the cold and warm breezes. No matter how mundane or neglectful an object may look or feel, everything transforms with the magic of spring. With the rich and colorful spring scenery, the falling raindrops resemble a youngster’s wistful tears. Spring in April is different because it marks the ending of winter and the beginning of spring - hence the irony of the cold wind and warm sun,

It is a gift, the presence this place has. It is where ribbons of laughter unfurl and ring like silver bells. It is where dreaming eyes glisten as they gaze into the Thames River for the lost treasure of hope. It is where the sweetest wild flowers of happiness can be found. It is London. So many people, and equally many shadows to play with. Don't be tricked though. There is still much room for life in London. Red buses are everywhere, and so are green olive trees. Hence the road to venture out never ends. The sky's translucent blueness blends into a tender mauve and white as th

Hong-dae, a region named after its nearby school Hongik University, is one of the hottest places in Seoul for its unique cultural features and liberal atmosphere. At first, it was the art majors of Hongik that gathered in front of their school and started off Hong-dae’s distinct artistic and youthful culture. Over time, the area became a place not only for Hongik students but also performance artists, indie bands, romantic cafes, young designers and so on. Even at this very moment, Hong-dae is filled with young and passionate free souls, searching for the romance of their life. This distinctive atmosphere of youthful energy is what makes Hong-dae particularly special compared to other entertainment venues. College students of today have lost their own culture and are wandering about between killing time and nightlife. Hong-dae may be an answer, a canton of fresh water to quench their thirst for something worth their passion. Nothing really seems special when you first set your foot in Hong-dae; it looks just like any other entertainment districts in Seoul. However, once you look more closely inside the real Hong-dae – that is when you see the true value of this florescent field of young culture.

The zealWhen the neon lights brighten up, the streets are filled with energetic youth, eager merchants, and enthusiastic musicians. Musicians at *Hongdae* or *Itaewon* are the leading force of the Korean *indie* (independent) music scene. They pursue their own style and taste, though they are ignored by the mass media. All sorts of musicians, their genres ranging from electro to jazz, perform to their best, hoping that their audience would feel their passion.Hold ’em highRock and hip-hop musicians know how to tame a crowd. Like a skillful trainer, they know how to bring the crowd to ecstasy with their licks and beats. Upon listening to the music, the heart of the audience thumps with zest.“Music is like a constant stimulus that represents who we are. It keeps us alive, often guiding us through eternal world of ecstasy. Through music, we communicate our perspective of the beautiful world into the listeners. Our only wish is to make the sad happier, the happy relaxed, and the people moved. Music is something that we can pour heart in, an alloy and harmony of all the members’ soul and passion,” say members of Strawberry Rain, a Korean Modern-rock band. The jazz state of mindJazz is a musical style that originated from African American communities in the 20th century. Despite its relatively short history, it has grown to become popular for the musicians’ ingenuity and spontaneity. In a jazz performance, four musicians cooperate to make creative music on the spot. That is why jazz as a performance is an adventure: Every performance is different.Box One.“Jazz is a mental attitude rather than a style,” Bill Evans (1929 – 1980), An American jazz pianist, inductee of the Down Beat Jazz Hall of FameAll these musicians have one thing in common. They know what their hearts crave for: music. Although the mainstream society upholds money and fame as primary values, these musicians follow their own path. Musicians feel most alive when they make music of their own. Along our lives, we all need to find such an oasis of passion that can energize us in times of our need.

AN AVERAGE of 8,000 people visit the aquarium every day. 40,000 creatures from 200 different species await them. Once people step in, the dazzling silver flashes from the fish swimming in unison, the crystal-clear glass walls of containers, and the seamlessly cleaned floor catch their eye; yet, few, sometimes even none, are seen working. The aquarium seems just about perfect without any effort. This is, however, only what our eyes can see. Behind the scenes, hands are moving tirelessly to maintain that nonchalant perfection.
