YOU ALL know this, right? The professor went on to next chapter of the textbook, after barely teaching the previous chapter for half an hour. A student was left feeling blank, as he did not know all the materials the professor skipped over just now. However, he could not complain, for all the other students seemed to understand the content perfectly. This is a typical scene in a second foreign language class at Yonsei University, in which many students in the classrooms already speak the foreign language fluently. This leaves other students who do not have such language skills feeling blank, e

Yonsei Celebrates 129 Years of HistoryIt is amazing to look at how much of a feat Yonsei has achieved in time. “Of the four basic missions of a higher education institution that include ‘education,’ ‘research,’ ‘medicine,’ and ‘social work,’ Yonsei is maintaining its position as a top university in all those except ‘research.’” This is a speech by President Jeong Kap-young at the “129th Foundation Day” of Yonsei University which was held on a warm summer day of May 10. In particular, the “Alumni Meeting” was held in order to celebrate the “129th Foundation Day” of Yonsei University. The two ev

HUMAN RIGHTS – these are the rights we are entitled to from birth as human beings. Usually the mentioning of human rights brings up essential elements, such as nourishment and shelter. Yet what we tend to forget is that education is also an essential element. Once the right to education is violated, it violates human rights as well. That is why any violation against the right to education cannot be easily overlooked. On April 2, the students of Yonsei boldly rose up against the violation of the right to education and have demanded a specifica solution from the school. Not only at Yonsei

“STANDBY: LIGHTS, sound, action!” As the curtain draws, a new world comes alive on stage. This is drama. In ancient history, drama had been the ultimate source for entertainment. Yet drama stepped down from its first place, due to technology that is becoming more advanced day by day. There are fewer people who actually visit theaters, not movie theaters, to watch real life people put on a drama; drama has become quite unfamiliar to most people. Luckily, however, Yonsei University has offered three chances to become friends with drama. Take the advantage of the last spring month May, and find o

Frozen tuition After a long debate, Yonsei University finally decided to freeze tuition for 2014. At the 5th Tuition Deliberation Committee, which was held in order to find a common ground on tuition, students demanded that the school lowers tuition, whereas the school insisted on raising the tuition fee. However, because there were no signs of solving the disagreement over tuition fee, the negotiation between students and the university broke down. On Jan. 22, 2014, Students’ Union held a press conference to criticize university’s unilateral decision on freezing tuition fee. Furthermore, they

GLOBALIZATION – THIS is undoubtedly one of the hottest trends of the 21st Century. Recently, many universities have been taking measures to globalize through exchange programs, inviting their students to go abroad, to see the bigger world. Through exchange programs, students are able to visit schools in foreign countries and experience a different lifestyle. Most students recommend this experience and rate it very highly. However, once the students return to their home universities, they often become frustrated due to difficulties in the process of having their credits approved. Where do

IN GOETHE’S play Faust , a man sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for the promise of youth. Derived from this cultural motif, the phrase “Faustian bargain” refers to any form of agreement that involves a person losing his soul in the process. Derek Bok, the former president of Harvard University, used the term “Faustian bargain” to describe the growing activities of universities in the market place. He viewed the corporatization of universities as constituting a Faustian bargain because their chase after financial benefits eventually caused them to sell their identity of an intellectual c

SEVERAL MONTHS ago, Professor Ma Gwang-soo required the students taking his class to submit the receipt of their textbooks along with their report. This caused an uproar amongst the student body, and some students directly opposed the professor by not buying the textbook. Although this may seem like a complex student-teacher conflict, the cause of such conflict stems from a simple difference of opinions regarding buying textbooks. These days, more and more students refuse to buy textbooks, while others insist that buying textbooks is obligatory for university students. What are the reasons for

LAST MAY, The Yonsei Annals published an article entitled “Sexual Harrassment and Assault in Yonsei”. The article dealt broadly with the Yonsei Gender Equity Center (YGEC), which lacked funding and had only one counselor, which may become a major obstacle for the school to manage effectively sexual harassment and assaults in Yonsei. On the other hand, the incident at Nonji-dang last May revealed a more fundamental problem with YGEC and its concept of “gender equity”. The Yonsei Annals delved deeper into this issue to help Yonseians’ understand its complex implications.May, at Nonji-dang A post

BENJAMIN DISRAELI, a great nineteenth-century British prime minister, said that “a university should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning.” In Disraeli’s view, college is supposed to be a place where students go to learn and to experience the profound intellectual challenges of academia. But that sentiment does not seem to hold anymore in contemporary Korean society. Many colleges in Korea seem to disregard the educational responsibility of a university and instead focus on raising the employment rates of their graduates. One might wonder, then, what exactly caused such a change in

VIRGIL ONCE said, “The greatest wealth is health”. As a student, however, medical expenses to treat illness or injury may be burdensome. Foreign students, especially, have to pay even more for medical care because they are not covered by national health insurance. Fortunately, Pre-doctoral Student Clinic of the College of Dentistry and the Health Service Centerlocated on campus provide medical care at a cheaper price. The Student Health Mutual-aid Association within the university campus also reduces the financial burden for the students by returning a considerable percentage of the medical bi

On the 12th of December in 2012, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of South Korea reported the findings from a survey conducted in 280 schools regarding cases of sexual harassment and assault within universities. The verdict was that from 168 cases in 2009 to 336 in 2011, the number of cases has exactly doubled and continues to be on the rise. In Yonsei University, such cases have also risen in number in recent years. Last year alone, 46 cases of sexual harassment and assault were reported to the Yonsei Gender Equity Center (YGEC). The existence of this center, which functions as the
