FASHION IS perhaps one of the mostdynamic cultural phenomena nowadays. With the development of communicationtechnologies, now it takes less than a day to geta grip of seasonal trends introduced on therunways of Paris and New York. Detailedphotographs of these collections are uploadedon the Internet right after the show, whichenables the fashion industry to quickly adoptthe new trends into their products. However, such a fast transmission of influence betweenthe fashion runways and the consumer industryensures the “fickle enthusiasm” of consumers.Yesterday’s “hot item” becomes “out of date”within a few weeks. Thus the “fast fashion”industry has advanced in the market. With thegrowth of the global Specialty retailer ofPrivate label Apparel (SPA) retailers, fast fashionhas become the prevalent trend in theworldwide fashion industry. Korea is not anexception. When you walk down the streets ofMyeongdong, you can see giant stores of ZARA,H&M, or UNIQLO. These days, many youngpeople enjoy buying clothes in these stores.

ACTORS STAND radiantly on stage, awed by many applauding audience. However, they cannot show theirfear, for they live other people’s lives, hiding their real face behind elaborate make-up. Stage actors’ lives arefar tougher than those of TV or movie actors. The play Return to Hamlet shows the real lives of these actorsin the theatrical world by reconstructing Shakespeare’s immortal masterpiece Hamlet.

UNIVERSITY OFTEN reminds people of an independent and romantic campus life. The reality is not the same, though. The old image of a student playing guitar on the green grass of the campus is nowhere to be seen. Police no longer chases student demonstrators; the movie *The Magnificent Holiday* seems so estranged from reality. Many believe the distinctive culture of university students no longer exists. However, university culture is still evolving to this date, and it is worthwhile to focus on this issue for it is directly related to us.

LOVE IS like a drug. First of all, everyone craves for it oncehaving tasted it. Whether it is love between parents andchildren, male and female, friends, it is all the same. Commonsense is that people love to be loved. However, the damage thatcomes when love is gone is huge. Some go crazy because theycannot bear the sorrow of losing their loved ones. Some desperatelytry to forget their past by dramatically changing their lives. Thedeeper the feeling, the more hurtful it gets. At one point in life, many people ask themselves, “Why do I love someone in the firstplace when I can be so hurt?” The musical Oh! While You wereAsleep suggests an answer to this question.

OPERA IS often perceived as an elite genre of performance arts enjoyed by the wealthy. Many peopleconsider operas to be incomprehensible because the songs and the dialogues are in Italian. Whenthe audience are not captivated by the songs or do not understand the plot, they will findthemselves bored and lost throughout the long performance. However, The Barber of Seville may change anyaudiences’ prejudice of dislike for operas. The director, Park Kyung-il, has adopted a new genre called“Mucpera,” a combination of musicals and opera. FRIEDENSREICH HUNDERTWASSER. That’s a mouthful. This seven-syllable-name belongs to the Austrian painter and architect renowned for bold colorings and a unique architectural style. In the gallery, his works greet people in a rather unusual manner. The gallery is dimly lit, pushing people to step closer to see the pictures clearly. As they walk closer, they notice sparkling color strips woven into the pictures. They are reminded one of Gustav Klimt’s glittering gold pieces, but Hundertwasser’s art is distinctly different. Spirals, vivid colors, and eco-friendly art pieces welcome the spectators at the Seoul Arts Center.

“ALL EXTERNAL expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important,” commented Steve Jobs after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. People who survive near death experiences, like Jobs, all say they come to see the world from a totally different perspective. Every day, every minute suddenly becomes incredibly precious. So they start each day as if “was your last, for someday you'll most certainly be right." The musical Miracle tells us a similar story, of a person who realizes that the things that he did not notice before were the most important.
