The Children of Gwaeng i bu ri mal is a novel published in 2000. The novel, written by Kim Jung-mi describes the life of villagers in an impoverished hillside village in Incheon, South Korea. Gwaeng i bu ri mal is the byname of this place. Since the author actually lived in this village, she draws a vivid and realistic account of what it was like to live there. The novel takes place in Gwaeng i bu ri mal, right after the Korean War. The Korean war had completely devastated the lives of refugees including children, according to the novel. Many of them were parentless and struggled to sustain their family by learning industrial skills; some worked during the day and went to school at night; most fell asleep clutching onto their hungry stomachs. Even though the situation was dire, the novel shows how the children gave hope to one another and depended on each other in the harshest of times.
