If you were given a billion won to SPEND during vacation, what would you do?

VACATION IS right around the corner! Although the idea of having two months off from school is exciting, most of us have plans such as studying language or going abroad with a minimal budget. Well, what if you were given a billion won to spend during your summer vacation? If you have to spend it all, what would you do? The Yonsei Annals asked students about this thrilling imagination.

First of all, I would like to give my parents and sibling a portion of that money. In addition, it would be great to be able to contribute to society by donating the money to the orphanage. If there is a chance, I want to travel around the world with the orphans as well, with the money given to me. That would be fun and meaningful at the same time.

Such opportunity is rare, so I would like to do something special with the money. I learned a little bit of Gayageum (a traditional Korean instrument) when I was young, and would like to learn more about Korean traditional music and instruments. Since they are not something useful or practical, using money for such purpose can be seen as a waste. However, if I could have money like that, I would not regret it.

If I had such money, I would go to Agia Napa in Cyprus, the mecca of parties. It is an island with beautiful beaches, and people from all over Europe. I could spend my vacation in Cyprus and enjoy all those parties with the fortune given to me. If I have money left over from Cyprus, I would head to New York. New York has all the great restaurants such as Babbo (a legendary Italian restaurant), Tribecca Grill (owned by Robert Deniro) and Nobu (the most famous Japanese restaurant in U.S.). I would visit all these places and have a taste of all kinds of cuisine. And if there's still money left? I'll go to Soho.

I do not think I would do anything particular with the money. Although it will disappear, I doubt my vacation plans will change because of the sudden fortune. If I had more money than that, I may do something else, like fly to Las Vegas and enjoy gambling and all kinds of services at a luxurious hotel. If not, I guess I could buy Lotto with it.

Ergine S Cho | Sr., Dept. of Human Environ. & Design

I would like to have adventures, like going on a tour to outerspace like the Exprise Foundation. I want to use the opportunity to do something that would go beyond our limits and make a new step in human history. Since I do not have any particular financial problems right now, I believe that with exceptionally more money, I should experience something others do not normally have the chance of doing.

With a billion won, I want to invest in our school, Yonsei. The money would be used for maintenance of Yonsei's symbolic features such as the Eagle Statue and Yoon Dong-ju Monument. I would like the statues to be cleaner and letters to be written clearly or renewed, for they are our school's important symbols. After my investment, I would like to be on the front page of our school's press paper, as a student who invested a billion won in Yonsei.
