Unique Courses
160 STUDENTS hand in hand with closed eyes walk outside the class. The professor leads the crowd and tells the students, "Trust the leader in front of you. You will soon recognize the importance of your leader." In what class could we find this scene? It is "Theory of Leadership".
"Theory of Leadership" (UCI1126/ three credits/ elective general education subject) was established by the Leadership Center. The course emphasizes the importance of leadership in current society and aims to prove that everyone could become a leader. The grades are evaluated by attendance (10%), group interview project (30%), group presentation (30%), and daily note (30%). There are no midterm and final exams in the class.
What is special about the class is that students are required to interview a leader of our society. Working in small groups students could learn the role of leader and how to manage team work as well. Also famous leaders of our society such as Son Hak-gyu (Governer of Gyeonggi Province) are invited to give lessons on leadership.
"Some people say leadership is an inherent characteristic but I don't think that's true. Anyone who is determined could become one, and that is the nucleus of this whole course. That is why I deny giving lectures because leadership is something that could be achieved through participation," says Prof. Kim Hyung-chul (Dept. of Phil.). As a student, Koo Sun-mo (Soph., Dept. of Sociology) says, "Leadership might be a subjective term to anyone but through interviews of leaders in our society, I could gain substantial experience on the subject."
There are many experts without leadership but what our society demands is an expert with leadership. Through this particular class, every expert Yonseian could become an expert + leader in their major fields.
