The job, displayer

DISPLAY DESIGNERS. What a fashionable name! But do you know what they actually do? Do not guess their work just by their title. There's more than just displaying products. Dazzled consumers are the magical result of the displayers' work. Does it sound interesting to you? You may be the perfect display designer material. Why don't you find out?

Who are displayers?
Displayers display show windows and shops with an understanding of marketing strategy. However, since show windows are part of a shop, displayers usually participate in designing the whole shop. "By designing, displayers are involved from visual and audio effects to convenience of customers. Displayers put their priority in linking display design to actual sale," says Kim So-young (Lecturer of Freya Fashion Academy fashion displayer course). When compared to VMD (Visual Merchandising) experts who manage the overall layout of a shop, displayers focus on show window displays. Yet, in reality, due to the vague boundary between VMD and display design, displayers work with VMD professionals as a team or work as VMD professionals themselves.

Displayers; synthetic artists
Various types of shops require the hand of displayers nowadays; department stores, brand shops, shopping malls, home shopping studios and television studios are typical examples. Many displayers in Korea work as staff of a fashion brand or a department store. With about 10 or more years of experience, displayers can work as free-lancers and make more profit than those who work in a company. However, being a free-lancer is not common. Career history is the most influential aspect of a display designer, which indirectly reflects how professional a displayer must be. "In special seasons, designers stay up all night for a month, designing and displaying the shop. Having to lead trends and read customer psychology, displayers suffer from both physical and psychological stress," says Hwang Ju-Mi (Display Section designer of Lotte Departement Store). Nevertheless, the accomplishment of a project seemed to make displayers constantly enjoy their work. "After completing each display design project, I always feel like a magician. A magician who changed the world you see," adds Hwang.

Are you qualified?
No absolute certificate or scholarship is required to become a displayer. However, to actually work as display designers, majoring in design & art fields is a tacit requirement. For those who have not majored in art, one way is to study in display design schools abroad. Yet, display designers recommend students to study in recognized schools or college courses, not private institutions. To be the best display designer, most displayers continuously enhance their ability with fashion and marketing information. Display design also requires the ability to manage time pressure. Because shops must be decorated everyday, most display work is done in a day with specific deadline hours.

Display designer seems to be a very specialized expert. Nevertheless, the most important thing in this field appears to be passion for the job itself. Have you ever stared at show window sparkle? Have you ever wondered what kind of music or scent was used in a department store? If you have, you may be destined to be a displayer, magician of the modern industry!
