“TO BE a great global university founded on science and technology” is the vision of NTU (Nanyang Technological University). In 2006, NTU had already formed academic and research partnerships with 300 institutions in 45 countries, striving for active interaction with overseas universities. Also, having been ranked one of the top 20 technology universities in the world in the Times Higher Education Supplement 2006, the school is gaining greater worldwide attention.

Facts & History
NTU was established in 1991, when Nanyang Technological Institute’s merged with the National Institute of Education. Located in the southwestern part of Singapore, NTU has 12 schools under four college structure – Col. of Engineering, Col. of Science, Col. of Business, and Col. of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. NTU is providing education for 19,100 undergraduates and 8,600 graduate students at present.

The Strengths of NTU
Needless to say, NTU is very renowned in the field of engineering. As the biggest college in the university, the Col. of Engineering comprises of six schools. Not only did the professors in the college receive domestic and international accolades for their achievements, but also the students have distinguished themselves in various competitions. Last year at the APCOT (Asia-Pacific Conference of Transducers and Micro-nano Technology) 2006 competition, an NTU student, Zhong Tian, received the Best Paper Award.
The rising of Nanyang Business School (Col. of Business) is another source of pride for NTU. The school provides 100 MBA programs and is one of only three in Asia to be accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business).

Talent-fostering
The real propelling power behind NTU’s capacity, however, is the school’s endeavors to raise their students’ potential to the highest level. Two of the notable aspects are the school’s two special programs - Global Immersion Programme and URECA (Undergraduate Research Experience on CAmpus programme). The Global Immersion Programme gives students a chance to spend a maximum of one year in overseas countries such as the US, China, India, France, and Switzerland. URECA is open to students with great academic interests, allowing them to participate in activities at some of the campus research centers.

Why NTU and Why Singapore?
Besides these fortes of NTU, the systems for exchange students are also well-organized. Students have access to ISC (International Student Center) whenever they have problems or questions. At ISC, meetings for exchange students from various nationalities are held every one or two weeks. As an example, students gather at tea parties to learn about each other’s cultures. On holidays, they go touring around famous places of Singapore such as the Asian Civilizations Museum and the night safari. Studying at NTU also has an advantage in that the school holds ‘tutorials’ which are different from common class lectures. Kim So-yeon (Sr., Dept. of Econ.) states, “For students who want to experience something more novel than what is offered at Yonsei, they could take ‘tutorial’ classes which are comparatively small-numbered and discussion-based.”
For a unique and unforgettable experience, Singapore, and NTU more specifically, is the right place to stay. Thanks to its multinational population, one easily becomes exposed to diverse cultures which avails the development of a “global mindset.” Plus, because Singapore is a bilingual society, visiting NTU as an exchange student may bring the great opportunity to learn both Chinese and English. So, dear Yonseians, why not take advantage of these?
