Unique Courses

90 STUDENTS are waiting for their professor in a classroom looking somewhat excited. "Hello, everyone." A professor with a very familiar voice comes in. At once, the students can notice him. The moderator of "MBC 100 Minutes Debate" : Prof. Son Seok-hee.

The "Issue and Debate" (COM2112/ three-credits/ elective major subject) is a course sharing interest about social issues. It is a new class which has never been tried in the Dept. of Mass Comm. in Yonsei Univ. Announcer Son Seak-hee takes charge in this class as a visiting professor. The grades are evaluated by exam (60%), assignment (30%) and participation (10%).

For about four weeks, Prof. Son generally gives a lecture about the theory of communication and journalism. After that, students have group debates about social issues analyzing radio and TV programs. Around two field tours including visiting the studio of "100 Minutes Debate" are also planned. Some other guest lecturers will be invited this semester, too.

Kim Yon-kyoung (Soph., Dept. of English Lang. & Lit.), one of the  students in the class says, "Of course I was interested in Prof. Son, but I also wanted to hear voices from famous members of society through this lecture." To these students, "I do not teach Yonseians speech techniques. I want to talk with students about various issues in our society," says Son Seak-hee.

In the first class on Sept. 1, over 140 students filled the classroom. It shows how many Yonseians have a big interest in this class. It is expected that many Yonseians can enlarge their point of view and study our society with the present announcer.
