Global Internship Program

AN INTERNSHIP is regarded as one of the essential factors to get a job, since employers in most fields prefer applicants who have practical experience. English proficiency has also become necessary for job applicants, as more and more companies are requiring English in the workplace, such as in meetings and negotiations. Yonsei’s Global Internship Program is ideal for those who are seeking to catch two birds with one stone!

What is the Global Internship Program?
The Global Internship Program gives students the chance to go abroad and serve as interns in local companies for one semester. It aims to enable students to develop global competitiveness, to train themselves in practical business, and to communicate well with foreigners. Every semester, about 20 students are selected through several steps, including applicant review and an interview. If you are finally chosen for the Global Internship Program you pay tuition to Yonsei Univ., as you are given 12 credits for the program. The fee for the internship and lodging are at your own expense, costing about 10 million. You will be allocated to a public organization or NGO, such as Amnesty International, or a private company, such as CNN or Merrill Lynch.

Interview
Kim Ye-na (Sr., Dept. of English Language & Lit.)
Last semester, I worked at the Smithsonian Institution, a public educational research institute that owns a number of museums located in Washington D.C. My job was to make a comparative analysis of the docent* programs of its museums, and write a report about that. I also conducted interviews with the visitors to improve the quality of educational services provided. I came to know well also about political issues while staying there during the U.S. Presidential Election of 2008. Working and getting along with other interns who came from diverse countries, I had a really great and unique experience. Most internships offer no stipend, but the Smithsonian Institution awarded me around $700 a month.

*A docent is an educator trained to further the public's understanding of the cultural and historical collections of museum.
