The Yonsei Annals

The North Korea Strategy Center (NKSC) is proud to announce a speaker series on
North Korean issues beginning in March 2014. This three-month-long series will feature
distinguished North Korean experts such as Dr. Daniel Pinkston of the International Crisis
Group, Mr. Sokeel Park of LiNK, and our center's very own Mr. Kang Chol Hwan. During its
first month, the series will focus on North Korea's history, economy and politics; the second
month will highlight North Korea's human rights issues through testimony by defectors and
experts; and the third month will focus on recent changes in the country and its future.

Aimed at increasing interest toward North Korean issues among the international
community in Seoul, the series ultimately aims to link participants with North Korean human
rights NGOs, mobilize volunteers, and, through the establishment of an "NK HUB," produce
a newsletter focused on North Korean human rights events.

The fifth lecture of the series will feature Mr. Ahn Myung-chul, a former prison
guard at one of North Korea’s political prison camps. Mr. Ahn experienced first-hand the
harsh treatment political prisoners suffer, from beatings and rape to torture and even cold-
blooded murder. He now shares his experience as a prison guard, his escape from the
country, and why he has been working for so long to close down North Korea’s prison
