EVER SEEN a little feline fellow walk across *Baekyang-ro*? The fellow is called *Hak-gwa-ni* and is one of the many feral cats that populate the campus of Yonsei University. In order to satisfy the curiosity of the many students who are wondering who look after the cats and how they are looked after, *The Yonsei Annals* interviewed three members of *Yon-nyang-shim*, the school group that looks after Yonsei’s feline friends. WALKING UNDER a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat, breaking a mirror, knocking on wood, and tossing spilled salt over your shoulder: these are all common superstitions many people have believed throughout the centuries. However, apart from these universal beliefs, each country has their own sayings based on their culture and historical background. South Korea has their share of sayings and superstitions that have been passed down. Your grandparents and parents might scold you with these sayings, or you might have heard your superstitious friend mutter them under their breath. But, have y

HOW MUCH are you willing to endure for money? Would you be able to tolerate a radical boss? An inexperienced manager who is doing everything wrong? What about an environment that expects so much yet informs you of nothing in advance? Nothing comes for free; however, it is also our natural desire to seek for an easy way out. This goes for the same way with Yonsei students and their search for part time jobs. We asked Yonseians about their best and worst part-time job experiences. Kim Ka-yeon (Jr, Dept. of Education) Since the start of the semester, I have been working as an in-school librarian

WHAT’S YOUR idea of a “dream campus”? Despite the variety of buildings and facilities already in place on the two campuses of Yonsei University, students still face difficulties and inconveniences due to the lack of facilities meeting their needs. In this month’s Voice on Campus, The Yonsei Annals asked several Yonsei students about the facilities or buildings they would like to see built on the Sinchon and Songdo campuses in hope of identifying ideas that would make life on campus more pleasant and efficient. FINAL EXAMS approach as winter draws near. The library swarms with students competing for vacant seats. Students stay up for many nights in a row as they frantically cram for exams. However, studies on the multi-store model of memory demonstrate that cramming won’t help. In fact, it would be better for students not to study at all rather than cram during an exam period; trying to digest a whole semester’s worth of materials will only result in memory deterioration from stress. This month’s Lightbulb will explore the biological nature of the memory system, which proves that excessive studying d

AS IT is nearly the end of the school year, many of us are ready to pack our bags and travel to different parts of the world. Whether we are travelling to a Western country or backpacking around Asia, there is no doubt that different countries have distinct cultures. In fact, some common aspects of life in Korea might even be illegal in a different country.Remember to look out for surprising laws when traveling abroad or you might end up paying a fine or being locked up during your vacation. Finish your duty before 10 p.m. If you really need to use the toilet after 10 p.m., you just might have

ON A jet-black night, a dog gets into the car with delight. He always loved driving with his master but something seems strange today. His master is unusually silent and does not even look at him. The car stops on the side of the road where no one is passing by. His master puts him down on the ground and gets back in the car. With a squeal of tires, the car drives away. Although he becomes a little bit scared, he does not panic because he believes that his beloved master will return and take him home. On a jet-black night, curled up on the cold ground, the dog endlessly waits for his master wh

THE WORD cave makes us think of a mythical pit full of treasures and unknown creatures. Caves somehow fire up our desire for an adventure, but since they are hard to find around the city, we have to suppress our instincts for exploration. For adventurers out there seeking exciting journeys near the city, Gwangmyeong Cave is the place to go. Only about an hour and a half ride away from Sinchon Station by subway, Gwangmyeong Cave provides both an escape from reality and a thrill of the unknown. Remnants of a sorrowful history Gwangmyeong Cave was previously a mine established by the Japanese in

ACCORDING TO the United Nations (UN), human population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050. This means that the demand for food will increase dramatically over the coming decades whereas the Earth’s resources are limited. The way we currently feed ourselves, however, further decreases resources we can consume, thus making the situation even worse. As a solution to this problem, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been stressing the importance of “sustainable diets,” diets with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to hea

“LESS THAN human.” “Deserves to be castrated.” Such phrases are common public sentiments in response to news coverage on sex offenders in South Korea. Considering the brutality of the assaults as well as the realization that anyone, including ourselves and our loved ones, can become the next victim, bursts of outrage and vehement curses are a natural reaction. People can at least lessen the burden on their minds by venting anger toward an inhumane perpetrator. However, what effects do such fiercely angry reactions have on us? Though it may temporarily relieve our senses of frustration and help

However, “having a good meal” is very important because it brings strength to our daily lives. Then, are we satisfied with our dietary lives? AGAIN, THE month of Halloween. Soon the streets will be filled with Halloween party-goers, sweet toothed trick or treaters, and eager costume wearers. However, Halloween is not only about simple fun and festivities. Halloween originated from a Celtic tradition; the ancient Celts used to dress up as ghosts to defend against evil spirits that were believed to appear once a year. People directly faced their fears in order to conquer them. In this month’s Voice on Campus, *The Yonsei Annals* asked several Yonseians what their worst fears are. EVERYTHING WE see in life has colors: the sky, the sun, cars, clothes and more. Our eyes are caught in a world full of colors every day. Nowadays, those various colors are often used for treatment in the practice of “color therapy” – coloring books and colored food would be its two representative types. Color therapy is increasingly receiving attention as a new method of healing both body and mind, since it causes no pain and complements more direct and invasive treatment methods such as medication and surgery. What exactly, then, is color therapy, and how is it used in our daily lives?

WHEN A friend calls us beautiful, we tend to be flattered. But is there a limit to calling someone beautiful? Walking down the streets, a woman hears, “Hey, looking beautiful!” A few moments later, she spots a man winking at her and then hears a whistle. No, she didn’t ask for it. And no, she was not flattered. In fact, she feels uncomfortable. Catcalling is when someone, usually a man, makes a whistle, shout, or comment of a sexual nature to a woman passing by. To people who live in major metropolitan areas, it probably happens often – too often to the point that people have even done s

“I ENVY you that you are good at studying!” Poet Ha Sang-wook’s answer to the question, “Is there anything you want to say to Yonsei students?” was both concise and mischievous. Every word that came from his mouth was witty but never cheap. During the interview, I saw that he had a very clear view on things and his answers to questions were often highly unpredictable. Nor can it be denied that he is trying make this world a better place by conveying empathy and consolation to readers, as expressed in his remark, “Empathy is the beginning of change.” Known for his short yet impressive poems, hi

THE TIME that professors provide outside of class dedicated for students is called “office hours”. Unfortunately, there are still many students who do not know that office hours exist. For students who know of the professors’ office hours, whether they make use of that time is up to them. Through either making an appointment or seeing the professor at a given time, students can receive various types of help regarding questions they have about their classes, essay ideas or drafts, or even inquiries on internships. While some find the office hours helpful, others do not find them as beneficial.
