AS THE weather dives deep into spring, skateboarders are returning to livening skateparks. Under the sunny sky, beginners and experts alike gather to encourage each other’s progress; the environment is positive as skaters audibly cheer when someone lands a trick, regardless of its difficulty. While skateboarding has existed in South Korea since the 1990s, it has recently risen in popularity, especially among the youth who have picked up the culture’s emerging street fashion and laid-back demeanor. It is also an approachable hobby to pick up as skaters can learn at their own pace and receive guidance from more experienced people at the park. Skateboarding culture around the world is known for being welcoming and diverse in age, gender, and nationality, and Korea’s burgeoning skateboarding culture appears to be no different.
