Scholarship systems in Yonsei Univ.

DID YOU know that Yonsei Univ. is one of the most generous universities with awarding scholarships in Korea? In 2007, Yonsei Univ. ranked first among Korean universities for the scholarship payment, providing approximately 68.9 billion for its students, according to Office of Student Affairs & Services. However, many students cannot feel this on the pulse because they do not know much information of the existing scholarships, easily giving up the chances to apply for them. *The Yonsei Annals* introduces scholarships provided by Yonsei Univ. which can lesson Yonseians’ financial burden.

University Designated Scholarship
There are two types of University Designated Scholarship: Freedom and Truth. Freedom Scholarship is for the students who cannot support their tuition fees because of their financial problems. Truth Scholarship is awarded to the students who excel others in their academic achievement based on their GPAs. Yonsei Univ. selects the grantees every end of the semester and awards total or partial tuition fees for the next semester. Applicants of University Designated Scholarship should complete more than 12 credits in the previous semester and GPA should be higher than 2.5. To apply for the scholarship, students need to fill up the application form (http://portal.yonsei.ac.kr → Academic Information System → Log In → Scholarship → Scholarship Application) and submit it with other required documents to their college offices.

Yonsei Alumni Scholarship
Yonsei Alumni Scholarship Association was established in 2001 sponsored by many alumni of Yonsei Univ. It selects about ten recipients once a year at the second semester and they receive full amount of tuition fee with regular allowances till graduation. Students whose accumulative average GPA is over 3.75 and who have completed at least three semesters are eligible for the scholarship. The qualification is also given to the students who passed the first part of the national examination. In particular, if students are studying pure academics such as physics or chemistry, they will take the priority for the scholarship.
Students are required to submit their applications (The form is posted on the homepage of Department of Student Welfare scholarship board (http://web.yonsei.ac.kr/Scholar/)), resume, and transcript to their college offices.

Working Student Scholarship
If you want to assist your parents in affording your tuition fee, Working Student Scholarship is worth challenging. Students receiving this scholarship work as assistants at one of the administrative departments in Yonsei Univ. The specific workplace and work hours are decided after selection. After working 120 hours during one semester, you get 700,000. The merits of this scholarship are that the hourly rate is relatively higher than general part-time jobs and the workload is quite moderate. “My work was to write down the names of students who offended the rules of Central Library such as eating in reading rooms. I was tired sometimes when they took defiant attitude, but I felt a sense of achievement as the number of students who broke the rules declined,” says Lee Sung-sim (Sr. Dept. of Chemistry), a grantee of Working Student Scholarship last semester.

You can get more information like specific application period or procedures on the homepage of Department of Student Welfare scholarship board (http://web.yonsei.ac.kr/Scholar/).
